Crítico, historiador de literatura y biógrafo estadounidense. Brooks asistió a la Universidad de Harvard. Su secuencia de libros Discoverers and inventors [Descubridores e Inventores], en la que traza la historia de la literatura estadounidense con abundantes detalles biográficos desde 1800 a 1915, incluye The Flowering of New England, 1815–1865 [El florecimiento de Nueva Inglaterra] (1936, Premio Pulitzer); New England: Indian Summer, 1865–1915 [Nueva Inglaterra: el veranito de San Martín, 1865–1915] (1940); The World of Washington Irving [El mundo de Washington Irving] (1944); The Times of Melville and Whitman [Los tiempos de Melville y Withman] (1947) y The Confident Years: 1885–1915 [Los años de confianza: 1885–1915] (1952).
